The powder room makeover continues! So far, I’ve shown you before shots of the room and how we tore down the wallpaper and repaired the wall. Now, a quickie light project that I mentioned yesterday: how to update an old vanity light for less than $20!
Looks totally different, right?
To move away from the ultra traditional look in the room without touching the ornate gold mirror, we had to do something with the light.
Here’s a closer view.
So, what fixes everything, ever? Spray paint!
We turned off the power in the house (super fun trying to find the circuit breaker in a house that isn’t my own…) and took the light off the wall. After wiping it down, I taped off the sockets and wires and sprayed the light fixture with Krylon’s brushed nickel – definitely my favorite nickel colored spray paint.
Once the paint cured a couple of hours, we rewired it and attached these vanity light glass pieces, which you can find in the lighting section near the vanity lights. (Side note: totally going to use this trick on the ceiling fans in our house!)
Isn’t it crazy how different the light looks with new glass?!
Oh, and in case you were wondering, I didn’t bother priming the metal. I typically prime stuff that’ll be touched and prodded (or at least use a paint + primer). This didn’t warrant priming, especially since the paint is recommended for use on metal.
For those keeping tally: the two vanity glass pieces were $16 and the spray paint was $3. Instead of buying a new light fixture, why not keep what you have an spruce it up?
Stay tuned – big reveal tomorrow!
Love that tip! I never would have thought of switching the glass out — genius!! Pinning this, lol!
