This blog is all about home improvements and DIY stuff. But, believe it or not, I do more than repaint rooms and watch 30 Rock reruns on the weekend. I read a lot, so I’m going to try out a new bloggy feature about what I’m reading. Then book nerds of the world can unite in the comments!

I was a voracious reader when I was younger. And my parents recklessly fueled my habit with trips to the library and Barnes and Noble. They’re book hoarders (especially you mom, don’t deny it!), but since when did growing up around a bunch of books hurt a kid?

Then there was college. Oh man. Farewell, reading for pleasure, hello, dense textbook reading. It wasn’t necessarily a bad thing – I developed a deep appreciation for nonfiction. “If you’re not learning something, what’s the point?” I often say.

I recently joined the year 2010 and discovered my new favorite thing: E-BOOKS. Dude. E-books are awesome. I just log on to the app, pick out my book and download it. If there’s a waiting list, I put myself on it and it emails me when the book is ready.

Anyway, more to the point:

What I’m Reading

Game. Of. Thrones.

“If you’re not learning something, what’s the point?” WHAT’S THE POINT?! How about it’s AWESOME.

We started watching the show when it first came out but I was so overwhelmed by the number of characters and storylines, I gave up. Fast-forward to this spring: we heard so many good things about the show, we couldn’t delay watching it any more. And of course, it was incredible. I think it was easier viewing the second time around because I had picked up on the storylines and characters through various blogs.

I liked the show so much, in fact, that I decided to read the series. A Game of Thrones is the first book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series by George R.R. Martin. It’s a huge book. It took me two weeks to read it, even with most of my spare time put into this book! The craziest thing, though? I already knew what was going to happen and I was STILL hooked on the book.

I almost dove into the second book, but decided I needed a brief reprieve.

Enter, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling.

A few days ago my friend Emilie texted to ask if I had read Bossypants by Tina Fey. Um, yeah duh Emilie. I didn’t mean for this anecdote to tie into my “I’m always watching 30 Rock” joke in the first paragraph, but it does. 30 Rock is my “play it as background noise” show, and as a result, I’m entirely too familiar with it. I had a gif of Liz Lemon in yesterday’s post.

Anyway, funny lady Tina Fey reminded me that funny lady Mindy Kaling has a memoir-ish book. I’m a few chapters in, and it’s pretty good. It’s an easy read written by and about an interesting person, organized in small, observational essays. I think she has a fascinating story and it’s fun to read about it from her perspective. Plus, the goofy coming of age stories remind you that celebrities are weirdo humans just like the rest of us. They just have better shoe collections.

What are you reading?

OH! One more thing! Traci from Beneath My Heart judged our bathroom makeover as worthy enough to receive a prize in the One Project Closer Before and After Contest! I was so flattered yesterday when I found out. The 13-week contest also supports Habitat for Humanity. I seriously can’t wait to go to Haven next month to meet some of these cool ladies.

I recognized your bathroom on the Before and After contest–congratulations! And I love Mindy Kaling….maybe I should give her book a try…an easy read might equal one I actually finish!

      Thanks!

I’m about halfway through her book. The observational essays are a little annoying, but the memoir parts are pretty great. Gotta love a strong female moving up in the ranks!

I’m reading Game of Thrones too!! The first book. We just plowed through the entire series. Even though I know exactly what will happen I still enjoy it. I just started it the other day and I’m probably around 200 pages in. It’s a big book o_o……like 800 + pages and an appendix. Anyways, I’m enjoying it and reading it here and there. I got so excited when you posted saying you read it, lol. YAY GAME OF THRONES!

YES! I can’t wait to read all of it and be one of those cool book readers who already knows what’s going to happen in season 4, haha. The length is definitely intimidating though. If you ever want to nerd out about the show, you know where to find me!

I just responded to your email! Totally nerding out right now! I want to be one of those cool people too. It’s going to take a long time to catch up though and I read fast (or at least I think so). It will probably take me another week to go through it. I dunno, we shall see. I read certain characters sections faster…lol. I have my faves
